Second Life
Posted by Cheryl Lykowski on April 22, 2007
I’ve been spending my free time (is there such a thing?) exploring Second Life. I can see where this can become ever so slightly addicting! Especially when you can visit so many cool places. I’ve been following a few people that are blogging about their experiences in SL and I’ve been checking different places out. I’ve been to the Virginia Tech wall memorial. It is eerily quiet there. Not much conversation but what can you say about it when most of us don’t understand why it happened. On the lighter side I rode a dolphin and I’ve had an orca swim right by me! I’ve visited the Star Trek museum, Imagination Island, stopped by Kathy Schrock’s house (no one was home), and hopefully I’ll run into some others that I might know. I can definitely see the wondrous possibilities of learning and teaching within SL, but I agree with Jen, I would not bring students here! I also teach in a K-6 building and this is no place for that young of students. I definitely can see the possibilities for older students and there is a Teen Life for those that are 13-18 years old. Professional development would have a whole new meaning in SL and I hope to participate soon. I hope to see some of you around in SL but for now I need to get back to RL.

Hmmm
I am not yet ready for SL, so I appreciate your reflection. And cool new blog theme. I usually keep tabs via Bloglines, which I realize has limitations for the visual.

I see more and more posts about SL, but I’m not there yet. I have enough trouble keeping up with Web 2.0 stuff. I feel like I’m getting further and further “out there” on the edge of technology, and the teachers I work with aren’t keeping up (except for you of course). It’s like they’re still in the 20th century, dealing with Word, PPT, etc. I sense a widening “digital divide” that has nothing to do with access. But anyway, keep us posted on all the cool stuff you’re doing in SL. I’ll stay safely behind in FL for now.

I am truly enjoying SL — and am very close to buying my own place there — but I do stay wary of it.
Right now — I am totally viewing it as another place to collaborate with others for ME. Not for students. In fact, I had an episode last week where a friend came in during my lunch time to see what I was doing — and a scantily clothed person showed up where I was visiting (and it was an educational place) and I had to quickly teleport to another arena and then had to explain SL to her. Uncomfortable, to say the least.
But am I — in the long run — enjoying SL. Yup. I like wandering and exploring and doing all the things I am too scared (or cheap) to do in RL. And I love meeting new people!! So, except for the scarey moments — it is good and a new way to pass the “hmmm — is there” free time!
Enjoy!
